The very first stage of the Austrian Jakobsweg starts, in fact, in Bratislava, at the ruins of the chapel of St. James. The first four kilometres are still in Slovak territory. After crossing Bratislava’s Old Town we arrive at the Danube at SNP bridge and go westwards alongside its northern or left bank up to the Lafranconi bridge, which will take you across the river. At the other side of the bridge there is a nicely paved bike path along the top of the dyke all the way to the border. However, it is better to turn right off the dyke and follow a quite and shady forest path that runs parallel to it just a few metres away. This path will take you back to the dyke about 400 m before the border.
