Section: Košice – Levoča

Map

Section description

The route in Eastern Slovakia is now fully marked and leads from the Cathedral of St. Elizabeth in Košice to the Basilica of St. James in Levoča. It is 100 km long and can be completed in 4-5 days. There are plenty of places to stay and eat along the way. You can choose to walk over 20 km the first four days and just a short distance on day 5 so that you have enough time to fully enjoy Levoča, one of the country’s major icons.
This section goes mainly along marked hiking trails. It is not suitable for bicycles or prams with children.

Stages in section

This stage starts in downtown Košice and leaves the city following hiking trails leading mostly uphill into the surrounding mountains and forests.
This stage first ascends to Chata Erika under Kojšová hoľa to then go down to the town of Gelnica. Most of the way follows marked hiking paths through the woods.
You will leave Gelnica and later on arrive in Krompachy along asphalt roads. In-between, you will need to go uphill along a forest road and then descend through a ski resort.
This stage is very pleasant and less demanding as it passes the undulating landscape of the Spiš region. Field roads alternate with asphalt ones. Stunning views at the top of each hill will take your breath away. Take your time to enjoy three of Slovakia’s World Heritage Sites listed by UNESCO.
Today you will again need to climb some mountains along field ways and asphalt roads. Do not rush through the Jerusalem of Spiš at the very beginning of the route, or through Marianska Hora just above today’s goal. Levoča is a major UNESCO World Heritage Site, so you might consider staying one full day visiting the must-sees and taking a break before hitting the road again.
